Taking the Forum Down

This has been mentioned before; I know it's taking up too much of my and Scott's time--among others I know of...

The other issue that really just hit home is that by venting on this board, we're not doing anything REAL.

Why aren't we rebutting these letters in the paper by writing our own? Why are we allowing three of four loudmouths to be perceived as representing this township?

Because we've been discussing the issues here and not in the paper.

What are we, nuts?!?!

Unless someone has an extremely valid reason why we shouldn't, this forum will be coming down in the next couple days.

Anyone who wants to contact me directly can email:

gottaluvvit@excite.com

It's been fun, but not very productive.

Now...GO WRITE A LETTER!!

Here's a link:

Why would they win?  This board was put up here to vent and discuss Rockaway Twp/ it just became a sounding board for Ted Doty.  His free will to bash others.

Karen,  If you want to take down the board - so be it.

Replacement..not destruction...

New name: "We care about Rockaway Twp Message board"

I am sure a few people would be happy to volunter as modorators IF the board has some simple rules.

1. NO name calling

2. Discussions must stay on topic for matters relating to Rockaway Twp.

3. Banning people is an option.

4. Links to the site with improper names be cut off. (ex. Truth in Rockaway has failed to use the proper name of this board even when asked nicely)

Just some thoughts.

This board does NOT need to come down ...

Basic netiquette rules would be helpful instead ... (edited excerpt from: http://randomnetstuff.com/netiquette.html)

Newsgroups and Bulletin Boards

  • PLEASE, get a feel for the type of board and the people that post on it before you start posting.

  • Be aware boards and newsgroups are archived, don't post anything you wouldn't want looked up later to haunt you.

  • Don't get into a flame war. After all, you'd be the fool just by typing profanities randomly into the 'net.

  • Ignore spelling mistakes. People don't really care, and correcting them is not proper netiquette.

  • Many boards have the ability to attach a picture to a post. Keep it in moderation as not to offend anyone.

  • Stay on topic. If you have something off topic to add to the community, make a new thread.

  • Don't post anybodys private information they may not want made public. Just ask yourself if you'd like that same info of you posted.

  • There are usually arguments on the boards, debate them. But stay clear of anything turning ugly.

  • Don't register multiple "user names". Pick one you like and post under it. It will let people know whos who when posting.

  • Just be all around courteous.

  • Agree not to use any obscene, indecent, or offensive language or to anything that is defamatory, abusive, harassing, or hateful.

Common sense civility and behavior, no?

Of course, if you are asking a moderator to create a ruleset for this message board, you are also asking a moderator to be the judge of what is 'obscene, indescent, offensive, etc...".  Once you do that, the board will be attacked as no longer supporting 'free speech'.  Look what happened at nj.con where only supposedly 'offensive' message were to be deleted, but in reality, the board was being controlled to foster a spin on the issues.

Karen - either leave it completely open and allow people to be offensive - if they so choose, or take it down.  Do not get in the middle as a moderator - you won't be happy with the personal attacks YOU will receive for being 'biased'.

Mr. dOTY - have any of your posts been removed?

Karen has a right to be offensive - just as you do.  Have you ever thought that perhaps, you bring out the worst in people?  Perhaps this is your special skill in life?  To make normal average people feel hatred towards your sorry ass?

I'm certainly not afraid of cowards like kare and her hubby but in answer to you question, II'd rather have my posts removed than die a slow painful death.  Thank you.

Wow - this is scary.  See how far this board has gone?  Now I agree with tED.  I have no respect for him - in fact, can't stand him...and wish he'd buy a one way ticket to anywhere else in the world....Having survived a very painful illness years ago, I wouldn't wish that on anyone - not even tED...

There goes many of the Stark's posts. And many of the opposer's posts too.

Get that national politcal crap outta here.  Wh care's about that stuff?

3. Banning people is an option.

Yep, of course, for most this would be temporary, since static IPs are rare.

4. Links to the site with improper names be cut off. (ex. Truth in Rockaway has failed to use the proper name of this board even when asked nicely)

How do you "cut off" a link to an improper site?  What does that mean?

Yes, I agree completely with you, DA ... It's a fine line ... a forum title change would probably also be required since it could be argued that the 'free speech' aspect is not as clear anymore.

I've worked on moderated boards in the past and things are fine as long as they are consistent when the decision is made (to ban, remove, delete posts). i.e. moderator(s) can't arbitrarily remove, ban user(s), delete posts without very clear justification and support for their decision(s). Otherwise, you're right - it WILL come back to haunt them - absolutely.

Sorry guys, I'm not up to the task.

If you want, we'll leave it up long enough for somebody who has the time to moderate, to set a new one up, then we'll post a thread with that link and leave it there a while.

Pretty soon over the next few days, we'll need to close this board to new posts.

Whoever plans to take over this joyous responsibility, please email me at gottaluvvit@excite.com by Saturday.

Thanks!
