03/15/06 - Posted from the Daily Record newsroom Proposed high school won't work To the Editor:
If you live in Rockaway Township and have children, you quickly discover that eighth-graders move on to one of two high schools based on where their home is located.
Of the four municipalities that comprise the Morris Hills Regional District, Rockaway Township is the only one that separates its kids. There are many theories as to why; ranging from deep-seated socio-economic bias to simply the way the township developed.
Every so often, citizens demand an explanation. On March 8, the township school board devoted a significant portion of its meeting to the issue with representatives of the regional board, including Superintendent Ernest Palestis, in attendance.
Through the years, I have been to a couple of meetings dealing with the same subject and went to see what this latest effort would bring to the table. In short, there was nothing new. A few angry parents claimed, in effect, that might makes right and the township should get what it wants, given it is the largest town in the regional district. Predictably, some suggested that Rockaway Township dissolve the regional and strike out on its own. Most disturbing however was that local school board president Frank Giarratano played to the crowd and lent support to those ideas. He went as far as authorizing questionnaires to be sent to all taxpayers.
In the end, proponents of a "Rockaway Township High School" will discover that no amount of pressure will convince the other communities making up Morris Hills Regional to disrupt their children's education in favor of Rockaway Township. To say nothing of arguments that would ensue regarding which town gets which school.
