Aphorisms

One of my all-time favorite aphorisms:

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer"

Anyone else have any favorite aphorisms to share?

It is so reassuring to have someone with so much wisdom amongst us especially since she is so willing to "share".  I would not know what to do without my daily lesson in English and Philosophy! My life would be like a ship stuck in a storm without a rudder.  For the entire State of NJ, thanks a million, B.

Hey b - I thought you asked for all your posts to be deleted, with the intention of never posting here again...what changed your mind? Did you think we would appreciate some grammar lessons??

(( ... thought you asked for all your posts to be deleted, with the intention of never posting here again... what changed your mind? ))

That [request to delete and never post again] message had actually been written and posted in haste and without proper think-through. I broke my cardinal rule of NEVER posting online in an emotional heat of the moment!  I have no regrets, though, since my other option, at that time,  would have had me lowering myself to the level of that which was causing the emotional heat at that time [name-calling, profanity, belittling, etc etc]. What I should have said was that I was taking a hiatus [to assess my involvement online here] rather than saying what I did - which is clearly coming back to haunt me everytime I post something here!  Oh well, what can you do (shrug) - it isn't like I'm the only one in the world who's said something they wish they hadn't said at some point in life, eh.

(( Did you think we would appreciate some grammar lessons?? ))

Grammar lessons?  None of my posts have been titled "Grammar Lesson," so I'm puzzled where that, and other references to [daily lesson in English and Philosophy] comes from.  First, they're not DAILY ... and second they aren't LESSONS. It's interesting that some view them that way, though.  I guess it's all in the
interpretation ... there's no obligation to pay them any concern, care or heed if they're not your [or anyone else's] cup of tea.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is all about. (shrug)... what are you [and others] REALLY trying to say? - that I should cease posting what I feel like posting here on this messageboard?

Bystander,

You absolutely bring the Wisdom of Solomon to this venue.  We are so honored to enjoy the presence of your company.  Thanks for sharing so very much of yourself with us peons.  We hang on every tiny little morsel of your thinking process, indeed.

See, ya gotta take pity on us tarbacker juice drinking hicks.  All we know how to do out here is to shoot small animals and eat 'em.  We are very simple folk who never got no learnin.  But, you are so beneficent towards us.  Your magnonimity is completely overwhelming!

Which actually has its basis in the I Ching. See Chinese Animism.

Bystander, I have one that you may find helpful in light of some that have responded to you here.

"Never argue with a fool, for he is doing the same"

Of course I have not followed this either, but it's good to fall back on once in a while. :)

Very true. Here's my 'fool' aphorism contribution:

Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish(Euripides)
