Riches?

There was a string talking about the assets of Rev Ireland - where does this info come from?  Is it true or are people guessing?

to the best of my knowledge the only riches we know he possesses are the ones he wears or drives; to the best of my knowledge, no one knows anything about what he owns. It's all speculation or rumor to the best of my knowledge.

Oh.  That is wierd.  Why are people throwing around rumors?

Newbie, people throw around rumors all the time. Especially when they feel strongly about something. It's that whole "human nature" thing.

Just like the rumor that Rockaway Township is a racist town.

What i thoght was odd about was the specific nature of the statements (900k house, etc).  It sounded like there was evidence, which would interest me.

Who knows, maybe someone found out a David Ireland purchased such a house; maybe it's the same David Ireland. Whatever. Although it'd be a shame if he bought in Sussex--he'd have quite a commute to Essex county for services.

Hmmm--is it a lie? Do you have proof that it's not true?

There's a lot of speculation going on on BOTH sides.

I recall the Rev claiming we are racists in RT...who stated the rumours first? And what would you consider more vicious, speculating about the car a person drives on a board read by 20 people, or painting a town racist with one broad stroke on CBS?? Get a grip pal...

That's a new one on me.

Are you saying we're being portrayed as a racist town because we are a racist town?

I think this has already been discussed many times, there are racists everywhere. Even in Montclair. But you don't claim that's a "racist town".

I don't care what color the people of this church are any more than I care what color their cars are.

Ok, thanks Karen.  Just wanted to see if there was any truth to any of it.

The info on the $900,000 house seems to be accurate. I cannot say who said it as it would jeopardize their job. Sorry, I wish I could provide better references. This did not come up as gossip. If the person is wrong about the David Ireland who bought a house in Sussex County, then I apologize for him.

Don't know if it's true or not...just daydreaming--$900K buys a whole butt-load of house in Sussex!

$900k seems ok to me.  Maybe I am in the minority but I still wonder why people here think the Rev. is stealing from his members.

ask this question of ireland - where does all the tithe money, book and video sales, etc... go??? his pockets are deep...where does the money come from???

i can only speak for my religion...catholic priests take a vow of poverty...i don't know many men of g-d (from my religious background) that drive around in a lexus...

I dont think anyone has suggested that he is "stealing" from anybody. What some people find curious is that some religious organizations and their respective leaders seem to have no problem with pressing their membership into working second jobs, tithing their salaries, etc in order to spend an extremely large sum of money on a project that is 40 miles from most of the members, is not wanted by the town, is huge in size even though they have no growth projections, and seems to do more for the leaders personally then their members. All this while those leaders drive in expensive new cars and wear fancy suits. Many people are accustomed to the more "traditional" clergy who live on a basic stipend, drive older cheap cars, take whatever contribution the membership can afford to give, and devote the churches time and money to helping people in need rather then the church leaders.

Careful Maria, remember it's a "not exactly a top of the line" Lexus. lol

And $900K is okay with you? Sure it's okay--but really, in Sussex do you know what that buys?

In Rockaway that buys a lot of house, and houses are expensive here.

here's one with 92 acres in Wantage; for under a million bucks, he could level the place and put up his church there--

At any rate, all I'm saying is, my minister doesn't live like this.

I am fascinated with the general Catholic perception that priests "vow of poverty" has any meaning.  Instead of being paid salaries they are given everything.  Protestant churches don't work like that.  I am sure the Boston diocese was really really struggling in the $100M estate they just sold to Boston College.

Essentially it is a "pay for responsibility" situation.  The greater the responsisbility the greater the pay.  Same as for the Catholic Church (the Pope's poverty is one I would like to experience!)

salaries are fine...getting paid in accordance to the amount of work you do is fine...but ireland makes his own salary up...sort of like congress men that vote for their own pay increases while decreasing funding for schools and the like...

the pope DOES NOT OWN the place he lives or much of anything...the pope after him will live in the same place as he does...
