OK Gang...better monitor this website now...since the NJ.com has quieted a new one may be forming that needs attention.

I am particularly disturbed by the passage:
"....that people in Rockaway have racial objections being masqueraded behind other concerns. That would seem unChristian. "......

Rockaway's gain will be our community's loss. We have many, many churches and other houses of worship in Montclair, but maybe none so large and active as Christ Church. Rev. Ireland has built a wonderful enterprise that is importantly a church, but also serves many other needs and interests of his community. I recently was told he has 5,000 active parishoners, which has to outstrip any other church in town.

Anyway, I understand Rockaway has been feeling resistance to the arrival of this congregation, and I imagine facing a change to the community is stressful (we don't like big changes in our community, either), but I think the impact of Christ Church will be positive; I also imagine the church will make available its resources (which are many) to the benefit of its new community, in the interest of being a good neighbor and doing the Christian thing.

I would urge the town of Rockaway to put down its guard and open its arms. Two cents from a disinterested observer who happens to know a thing or two.

Kate,

"disinterested" and "know a thing or two" are potentially exclusive conditions - curious as to what you mean - willing to elaborate?

"Disinterested" in that I do not attend this church, do not attend church nearby Christ Church's current location (in which event, I might have a personal stake in the regional parking shortage), and do not have any particular concern whether the church ultimately is permitted to relocate, other than for the possibility that people in Rockaway have racial objections being masqueraded behind other concerns. That would seem unChristian.

"Know a thing or two" because I had occasion, wearing my professional hat, to meet Reverend Ireland recently, at which time we discussed at length his prospering congregation, the prospects for this move, and other things to which I may have referred in my posting.

Maybe an opportunity to reach some actual members from that neck of the woods rather than just bickering with the same two or three RT members who just want a shorter trip to church...

We might actually get some honest insight into what members are really thinking about all this.
