It was about three years ago that Rockaway Township completed a $10.8 million school expansion. I remember because my son was a 6th grader at Copeland and construction had to be scheduled around the school day. I also remember School Superintendent, Tom Parciak saying that there would be enough classroom space the next few years; the expansion added about 20 classrooms.
Their own demography study documents that school census increased by only 119 students in the last five years; at 20 students per room, the increase accounts for 6 classrooms. However, the Facilities Committee reported that Township schools currently have an excess of 450 students. The facts just don't support the Committee report.
The Committee also claims that 472 more students will enroll within the next five years. They insist growth will result from a condominiums being built in the Highlands and an apartment complex in the Township's 1st Ward. Although both projects are on the books, the demography report notes that the Highland project is on hold and may be reduced in size. Also anyone that travels Mt Pleasant Ave. can see that work on the apartments hasn't begun. This is another fact that doesn't support the Committee's findings.
I can only hope that the BOE isn't trying to take advantage of opposition to Christ Church to propose an expensive school expansion that facts indicate is unnecessary
