Christ Church foe: Supporter harassing me Co-founder of group files complaint over comments posted on Web
BY ROB JENNINGS DAILY RECORD
ROCKAWAY TWP. --Lisa Salberg, co-founder of a group opposing Christ Church of Montclair's building plan, is accusing a local church supporter of "harassment via Internet."
She has filed a criminal complaint against Ted Doty with township police.
Police declined to provide a copy of the Aug. 11 complaint by Salberg, who founded Voices of Rockaway Township with her husband and another couple two years ago. Salberg, though, extensively discussed the matter on an Internet message board site favored by opponents of the mega-church proposal.
In addition to posting critical messages she alleged were sent by township resident Ted Doty, Salberg wrote of having met with police, noted the complaint's docket number --IR#05-25201 -- and ended by saying, "It is over Ted."
"I am stating for all the world to see that Ted Doty's campaign of harassment against me will come to an end, NOW," Salberg wrote on the "All opinions are welcome, but sorry no instigators" message board.
Salberg wrote that two of the offending messages sent from a screen name she believes is used by Doty included the phrases, "you should live in fear" and "you are toast."
Reached for comment, Doty acknowledged sending frequent e-mails and "private messages"to Salberg and other VORT founders via the message board site -- which he claimed had banned his posts -- but maintained that everything he wrote was "a response to something she's said openly and publicly."
Doty added that he sent another e-mail to Salberg on Tuesday, charging that some of what was publicly attributed to him on the message board had actually been sent by someone else.
"Just be careful of defamation. You're saying these things are me and they're not," Doty said, adding that parts of what he had actually written were being taken out of context by Salberg in order to appear threatening.
No arrest has been made and Doty, who served on the school board and ran unsuccessfully for mayor before becoming 5,000-member Christ Church's highest-profile supporter in Rockaway Township, said on Tuesday afternoon that he had not been contacted by police.
"Her Web site invites comments from the public," Doty said, referring to an e-mail link on to the Voices of Rockaway Township site.
Both Salberg and Doty attended Monday's planning board hearing, the 19th on the 5,000-member church's proposed 2,512-seat sanctuary, private K-5 school and other uses.
Before the meeting, Salberg confirmed that she had filed the complaint -- which cited an incident at 2:42 p.m. on Aug. 8 -- but declined to further discuss it.
"It's in the hands of the police now. I'm going to leave it there," Salberg said.
Salberg and Doty have been trading barbs on the Internet ever since landing on opposite sides in the Christ Church matter.
Salberg wrote that Doty continued sending e-mails and private messages long after she told him to stop.
The final straw, apparently, was an e-mail that, among other things, criticized her for not denouncing insensitive remarks purportedly made by her supporters.
"If anyone should be ashamed it is you," wrote Salberg, adding that she was on the phone with police while typing.
Christ Church has said it has no affiliation with Doty -- though when the school board was considering acquiring the Agilent site through eminent domain, Doty sent 7,000 letters to township residents arguing that enrollment projections did not justify a new public school.
Doty was the Democratic mayoral candidate in 1999, losing to John Inglesino
Guess Ted is getting the notarity he craves now good or bad. One thing in the article I'm wondering about: "Christ Church has said it has no affiliation with Doty -- though when the school board was considering acquiring the Agilent site through eminent domain, Doty sent 7,000 letters to township residents arguing that enrollment projections did not justify a new public school." Sounds like the DR thinks cc had something to do with ted's letters. Could it be cc is lying again saying they had no affiliation with him?
I see that once again the Daily Record has choosen to report something with half the facts. I know that Rob wants a good shocking story, but yet again I think he has missed the big picture in the hopes for a headline.
As I have said previously this is now a matter for the police and they will do their job. No person has a right to harrass anyone even if they have a difference of opinions on a building project.
Just for the record - as it seems the Daily Record will take "quotes" from me via a message board - the quotes "live in fear" and "you are toast" were not made on a message board they were emails - the return address on the emails "teddoty@optonline.net" - if you actually waited for the police to do their work you would know this.
It should be an interesting day.

jEnnings is without any journalistic integrity - hE has zero credibility as far as a real reporter is concerned. hang in there Lisa - mS mIgalo has some explaining to do...
"Christ Church Foe" I think is a poor choice of words, even if it might sell newspapers. Although there are some that sadly oppose Christ Church for who they are, I know that Lisa, as well as myself, oppose the scale of the project and not the church per say. Less than responsible headlines such as this cloud the facts and are yet another example of poor journalism.
Given what we all of us now know about "the church" and its mode of behaviour,I find it disengenuous for you to imply that you have no ill feelings about this so called church. Your PC is sickening. Cut us a break, please!
I have an additional thought to share with the participants of this board - and its 'visitors'.
The title of this article referring to me as "Christ Church foe" is inciteful, hateful and incorrect. Since day one I have said I oppose the re-development of the 140 Green Pond Rd property as the plan put forth by this applicant, who happens to be a house of worship, is far to intense of a use for this environmentally sensitive area, the traffic impact would be far too much on a small road way and the master plan of Rockaway Twp clearly states that the Green Pond corridor is environmentally sensitive and should have a limited intensity of use. As a taxpayer I also believe the plan to be a burden to the financial well being of the entire community as well.
These positions have been clearly stated by Voices of Rockaway Twp on hundreds of occasions. It is sad that the 'press' chooses to be inciteful and sensationalist.
Further, my complaint against Ted Dody has nothing to do with the application for the redevelopment of Green Pond Rd. Having a difference of opinions on a building project does not give anyone the right to harass someone else and state such horrible things, as "you should live in fear" - via emails.

Don't confuse common decency and a sense of fair play with PC rat, even if they may be foreign concepts to you. I don't know how you can alternate from semi-lucid to raving lunatic with such ease . For what it's worth, I place you, russ and ted doty in the same category.....just on opposite sides. What a moron.......a bigoted hipocritical self imoportant moron.
whatever.content is more important than spelling. Bellvue is full of good spellers. Besides, it was before the coffee kicked in after a late night. Why don't you request being banned again and do us all a favor. Or better yet, get a private forum for you, ted and russ.......we can call it the "looney birds of a feather forum". I liked it better when we were talking about 60's music and woodstock and stuff rat.....maybe sometime in the future..............
sorry karen, I got thick skin, but this bozo can push my buttons.
O h my buttons are pushed alright, but I'm still smiling and shaking my head when it happens, not steaming as one might expect or hope. I rest easy knowing that we have at least two gadflys protecting the good people of Rockaway Township, because I know almost everyone takes them both as seriously as I do.
Ok rat, before karen sends us both to our rooms without any supper,or beats us with a wooden spoon or something, I'll knock it off. Wanna talk about Woodstock or 60's music again?
The point of this message board (and VORT in my opinion) is that while we as members of our community (Rockaway Township) do not necessarily oppose a church’s existence, we do all oppose the impact that a church of this size would most definitely have on our rural community…at every level.
Some residents are more distressed about the impact of the environment and potential, some about traffic and noise, taxing our emergency services and town recourses, some about loss of revenue for the town (I’m sure there are a few I missed).
Myself I am concerned about all of the above. I love this town and I don’t want it changed and ruined! We have a responsibility to our children and grandchildren.
I’ll do anything I can to help maintain our collective quality of life.
Well said, thank you! I agree wholeheartedly. It's never been about a church. It's always been about the impact that something, anything, that size would have on RT.
I heeded the warnings given out on the PA system to avoid the brown acid! LOL! Lotta sick people there. The saying goes "if you remember the 60's, then you were not there."
Ahhh, you were there then. I was 12 and a half years old and mom wouldn't let me go. I got friends that were there, and even kinda know one guy that played there on a casual basis.
Good points Thinker and Maynard and thank you for posting them. There are many concerns we have collectively about this project. I would have to say that of the hundereds if not thousands of people I have spoken to in the past 2 years most mention all the issues posted by Maynard. I myself, being born and raised here, intend to do all I can to ensure that the semi-rural way of life we have always enjoyed remains. Just because other areas of NJ are over crowded does not mean we have to follow along - two wrongs do not make a right!
Keep up the good fight and never let the BULLIES get ya down!

PS I got a few phone calls last night from the WML area - seems that someone tossed out a computer in the trash - any quesses who that might have been. (this is not a joke!)

I hope for his sake that he took a hammer to the hard drive first! Otherwise, the data is retrievable no matter what he may think that he may have done to prevent that.
You cannot throw a computer out in the trash. It's against the law because it's harmful to the environment. Oh, I get it, certain people don't care about the environment, that's why they support cc (along with other reasons that we won't discuss right now).
Its probably his old computer. he must have gotten a new one with a new service provider in order to sneek back on this forum a couple of weeks ago.
PS: The Denville recycling center has a large bin for unwanted electronics of any size. I dump things there all the time. (They don't check your residence)
Ah the '60s, I dont remember them well. Actually I was 16 in '69 and a guy I was working with for the summer went to Woodstock. He offered me a ride, but after seeing the suitcase full of drugs he was taking along, I declined. Guess he made a fortune that weekend, but he took several days to come back to work afterwards. LOL. That was indeed a piece of history that I wish I had participated in.
