Question for Rick S.

Rick,

If you are the Rick S that I think you are, you know me. Think Cub Scouts at KDM, and look at my initials. My question is a technical one. If a person posts to the NJ.com forum from their place of work, assuming it is a large corporation, would the firewall protect access of there IP address. Also if a person has a home LAN or router (like LynkSys or Dlink, etc) is there firewall protection there as well. Oh, and one more question. Optonline uses dynamic IP addressing, does that that mean a new IP is address is assigned everytime you establish a connection?

I am trying to figure out ways to outsmart Toddavid and his propaganda machine on NJ.com.

BJR,

And I thought I knew you from basketball!

To answer some of your questions:

  1. If you access the interent from a large company, you are most likely coming through a proxy.  The ip address that is seen on the remote end is the address of the proxy.  Of course, it is very possible to have your PROXY address blocked.  Some large companies have multiple proxies which means your ip to the outside world might change, but you have no control over the change.  You could stay on the same proxy for hours before being sent somewhere else.

  2. Home LANs will not have any affect on your ip address.  Your machine will probably have an address in the 192.168.x.x address space, but your router will replace that address with your TRUE IP address.

  3. Optonline dynamically assigns IP addresses through DHCP.  When you get an address, you also get a 'lease' on that address, so you 'own' it for a while.  Generally, you do not turn off your cable modem, so you will most likely keep the same address as your modem will automatically renew your lease when it expires.

Don't lose heart though.  On the internet many things are technically feasible.  This board is probably not the best place for a long technical discussion.  I wouldn't want to boar some of the lurkers with long technical details.  Feel free to contact me...

Just one thing - I hate MACS.  If you have a MAC, you're on your own.  If you have a PC - well...I should be able to help (Windows or Linux)

BJR,

You'll have to win your next game to see us

That last one almost got away from you with that buzzer beater!

Don't worry - we took care of the team that beat you, so you won't face them again.  Hopefully, we'll see you in a week (you can always call me though)!

Rick

More on home routers, etc...

Even though Optimum Online uses a "dynamic" IP address, like Rick said, your modem will pick up the same one when it renews. This will normally happen even if it is turned off and then restarted. Generally you will always have the same IP to the outside world. Although the router or firewall will prevent someone from the outside getting into your system, and it supplies its own IP address to the PC's behind it, it doesnt effect the outside IP address assigned to your "connection" from your ISP. Its that IP address that the forum can see associated with a Screen Name. They can apparently block either a name or go one step further and block the originating IP address as well. From what I have seen, though, the block is only temporary, a day or two, then you can get back on. I think the best way to defeat that ****head is just not to feed him. He is already talking to himself most of the time, if you just dont respond at all to him, it will be only him. Other than that, we just need to ID him and then the reprocussions he will feel financially will shut him up.
