Christ Church's Sunday services coming soon in Rockaway Twp.

Controversial megachurch gains certificate of occupancy

By ROB JENNINGS
STAFF WRITER

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP -- Christ Church soon will begin holding Sunday services at its temporary sanctuary on Green Pond Road after the township granted its application on Monday for a certificate of occupancy.

Town Business Administrator Greg Poff said the certificate the last remaining hurdle to opening the temporary sanctuary was authorized by construction official Andrew Sanfilippo.

"They are now able to hold services,'' Poff said of the megachurch.

Christ Church's chief operating officer, Rupert A. Hayles Jr., said last week that services would begin sometime in June.

Hayles said on Monday that the church's presbytery board consisting of approximately eight pastors and led by the Rev. David Ireland will meet today and determine a schedule.

The temporary sanctuary, with room for approximately 1,000 people, was built on the 107-acre property at 140 Green Pond Road purchased by Christ Church for $10.25 million in 2005.

Christ Church sought the temporary sanctuary as it awaits final state approval for its full building plan at the site, to include a 2,512-seat sanctuary and a private K-5 school.

The township Planning Board approved the full building plan in 2007, following more than three years of occasionally contentious hearings that focused on traffic impact and other issues. Poff said the church will pay for a police officer to help control traffic when services are held.

Charles Mueller, a town resident who opposed the building plan and attended many of the 33 public hearings, said on Monday that his views remained the same.

"It's still an unwelcome addition to town,'' Mueller said.

Christ Church's administrative offices previously were granted permission by the town to move to the Green Pond Road site. The administrative offices and temporary sanctuary are using a building formerly occupied by Agilent Technologies.

Founded in Montclair

Christ Church, founded by Ireland in Montclair in 1986, sought larger space as its congregation soared beyond 5,000. It settled on the Rockaway Township site in 2003.

The church also will continue holding services at its 900-seat cathedral in Montclair.

Ireland said previously that he expects the complete facility in Rockaway Township will open in 2011 or 2012. The temporary sanctuary, rather than becoming part of the permanent sanctuary, will be divided and used for children's programs.

Let everyone in town remember this should they be tempted to pull the lever for Price in the fall. As the saying goes, "with friends like him, who needs enemies?"

Going to be real interesting to see what the morning traffic is like on Green Pond Road. Will it live up to our congested expectations or theirs?

It is going to be interesting to see the effect on RT due to:

1. Prisoner Reform Ministries

2. Drug Re-hab Ministries

3. Methodone Clinics

4. etc.

The prospect of this circus at the end of my block makes me want to go out and commit armed robbery so that I can purchase some heroine and shoot up. Then, after I get busted I can then partake in all of the benefits that the circus has to provide me with to "save me".

Hello to all -
I have been wrapped up in other issues for a while - sorry I have not stopped in. Just a reminder that June 1-7 is national CPR and AED week - if you are not trained in CPR or AED use and want to be just let me know!

So here is what I know - this CO is actually nothing more then a political trick from Corzine. They did not qualify for DEP permission... but for a little loophole - this is actually a temporary CO for a temporary location. This is not a Permanent CO - such nonsense!

OK what else is interesting is that the school is not permited on this land UNLESS the gov of the state wishes to overrule his own rule and allow children on soil that is known to be contaminated - the last time a move like that cost the state MILLIONS when all the kids got sick and the DEP had to admit they knew it could happen and permitted it anyway.

It is time to get this back in the publics view - Corzine may be helping Irland but is that really what he needs to pay attention to with an election a few months away - I suspect he has some bigger fish to fry at this point. Imagine the headlines "Corzine calls a special favor and permits building a school on contaiminated property" Not real good for getting people to vote for you....

The CO is only for the temporary sanctuary and is only a temporary CO...

FYI the new plans for their "Permanent " building do not include an underground parking lot or many other features from the old plan... gee didnt we tell them that would not work... 5 years ago!?????!

Oh in other news the holy roller of Upper Hibernia Rd. showed his true colors again today - while walking out of the post office Russ and wife were walking in with packages - I held the door and they walked in... and they did not even have the common courtesy to say "thank you". Oh well I guess manners are not a Christian thing after all.

What makes you think that he is Christian? What you are saying is truly insulting to real Christians.

Being a member of christ church certainly does not qualify Russ to be identified as a Christian any more than Obama belonging to Wrights chuch made him into a Christian.

I would have to say that Christians (and there are plenty of good and real Christians in this Country) deserve an apology for that declaration that you made.

Was just wondering if there is any time lime for this "temporary CO". Just how temporary is temporary? Thanks.

I do not know, but just using basic logic, consider the following. Everything under the sun and on the earth is temporary and time is relative to a reference interval.

When it comes to COs for this circus, temporary most likely means "as long as ireland wants it to remain that way". Certainly, it is completely unimaginable that anyone in the town government would ever even consider pulling irelands "temporary CO", ever.

Makes sense? Can anyone imagine it any other way? So, I think that I have answered this question in a practical manner without even reading the documents.

Lisa,

Get serious. Do you think that anyone is going to preclude children from attending irelands sunday circus on his polluted grounds? How is it that going to a circus on polluted grounds does not effect children, but going to school does? How about Sunday Circus school for the children - - - is someone going to stop ireland from running that scam?

You really are not living in reality. Ireland does whatever he wants so long as it involves improving his wealth and so long as he can afford the infrastructure. Politicians in Trenton do whatever they have to do to get re-elected. That means, in terms of what a black church wants to do, turning a blind eye to it, as we all have seen thus far.

And, that is all that there is to that.

Rat.

I went by there around 8:30 and all was quiet. Any idea why the four police cars were there?

No clue, they were parked two one the north bound side and two on the south bound side. Maybe they were discussing contingency plans for different scenarios.

Regarding traffic - I would think that the first day of services "The Grand Opening" will be done in a big way and attract the entire flock. After that it will taper off. Those living in Essex county will continue to attend Montclair. I think there will be more traffic when the facility is used for special events, picnics, etc. Rather than Sunday morning services. i question if Christ church is really as large as it has been portrayed or if this is just Ireland's Field of Dreams (build it and they wll come). Whenever I see pictures of news clips of services in Montclair - there are always plenty of empty seats. I guess time will tell.

Just my thoughts - No data to back this up

Your ideas about traffic seem reasonable and logical. As you say, time will tell and I guess we'll get the first installment of that pretty soon. Any word on when in June the "grand opening" will be?

I am sure that his new theatrical stage is complete with a wide array of coloured fresnel stage lighting as well as a 50 channel sound system capable of developing a few hundred killowatts of audio.

Nice and spiritually inspired.
