Debate on religion - summed up in quotes

I believe that George Bernard Shaw said it best when he said

No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says:  He is always convinced that it says what he means.

Some other quotes of note (food for thought):

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.  ~Jonathan Swift (sad, but true Mr. Swift)

God made so many different kinds of people.  Why would he allow only one way to serve him?  ~Martin Buber (If only all the people of the world could understand Mr. Buber...if only)

You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.  ~Anne Lamott (Ms. Lamott - You could NOT have said it better!)

How many observe Christ's birthday! How few his precepts!  O! 'tis easier to keep holidays than commandments.
~Benjamin Franklin (Mr. Franklin must have been reading the rantings on the nj.com board)

We are punished by our sins, not for them~Elbert Hubbard (very prophetic Mr. Hubbard)

I couldn't resist the last few- I hope you all have a sense of humor (even you Mr. Whinestein - is that how you spell it - sorry if I got it wrong):

All religions are the same:  religion is basically guilt, with different holidays.  ~Cathy Ladman (Oy)

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State.  My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.  ~George Carlin (very appropriate in our case Mr. Carlin)

"There are no atheists in foxholes" isn't an argument against atheism, it's an argument against foxholes.  ~James Morrow (Ah Mr. Morrow - if the world governments could only figure this one out)

  1. "These days, we learn from the philanthropists like the Rockefellers. First you rob everybody, then you give to the poor."

  2. "Never hate your enemies -- it effects your judgement." ~Michael Corleone

As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in schools.  ~Author Unknown (This must be true - my kids tell me it is!)

...and finally, one for Craig (re his conversation with Matthew - hey Daniel, please pass it on):

When lip service to some mysterious deity permits bestiality on Wednesday and absolution on Sunday, cash me out.  ~Frank Sinatra

Note to Mr. Whinestein (sp?) and Mr. Jennings:  If you find these quotes offensive, please complain to the gentlemen and ladies who originated them.  They have all been checked for validity via multiple sources.  They were not posted to offend, but to provoke thought - as was intended by their original authors.   Messrs Shaw,  Swift, Franklin, Hubbard, and Sinatra may be reached (presumtively) in heaven.  For their contact information, please check with those who claim a direct link.   Ms. Lamott may be reached at NPR or via Salon Magazine.  Ms. Ladman (http://www.cathyladman.com) and Mr. Carlin (http://www.georgecarlin.com) can be contacted via their websites.  Sorry, but I can't find Mr. Morrow's contact info - you'll have to use your journalistic skills to track him down.   Michael Corleone is a fictional character and can not be reached (I'll bet you knew that already).

Great post Gad - I am sure the wallflowers will be checking to see if they can twist it into negative press. Last time I checked Americans have the right of free speach.

Don't tread on me...

I think the best point to be made about any debate on religion is that there should not be one. Most certainly in the case of the CC application it has no relevence.(or should not)

fyrral,

I would have to say I agree with you 100%, debates about religion have no value.  I would add that healthy discussion about religion helps people learn and grow.  It is very productive and educational.  I recall a friend of mine who was a Quaker and took the time to teach me about his faith, I really enjoyed hearing his point of view.  16 years ago when I met this man I had no idea the Quaker religion was so active and so wide spread. It was through open discussion he was able to share his view, for that I am very thankful that he shared this with me.  His name was David and he passed away about 14 years ago however I will never forget the gift he left with me.

Religion is very personal and no person has the right to judge how any other person may choose to practice, or not practice any specific religion.

Peace!

Lisa,

Your platitude sounds almost 100 percent correct, but not quite.  When a religion advocates the killing of all others to force conversion, then we have a problem, don't you think?  As an example, look at the Christian crusades.  I really doubt that you would endorse that behaviour.  And, today, you can look at a sector of the Muslim religion which advocates the annialiation (Jjihad) of all who do not adhere and convert to their way of thinking.

Sorry to burst your bubble but these sorts of things must be discussed before they creep up and hurt all of us.

Daniel

Karen,

When it comes to negotiating with people of the extreme Muslim world, we are all living on the edge.  Clearly, these are not people that one negotiates with.  Their only goal is our destruction and it is non-negotiable.

You did not know that?  Amazing.

Settle down dude - this is a town problem, not a World problem - Bush is addresing these a$$holes as we post. The fact of the matter is that CC congregants have been duped by a mega-egotistical "pastor" whom is leading his "flock" down the path of ruin.

The world wide problem with extremists will be dealt with as needed - iRELAND and his cronies are in no way affiliated with these a$$holes...let's keep it apples to apples.

Rational, I consider you a friend. Please don't force my hand. $hit like that is unproductive and inflammatory and gives the vultures rotten meat to pick at.

Please don't push me.

I made no connection to the international problem of Muslim extremism and our towns problem with CC.  I was commenting on the importance of discussing religion as more than a passing fancy in response to Lisa.  Religious discussion is not always a simple little parlor game as it would seem that Lisa would have it; sometimes the stakes can be fatal to all of us as is the case with Islamic Extremists.

OK?

Rational,

Why must you take such a tone?  I have not suggested that discussion of religion is a "simple little parlor game", I stated that it was  "It is very productive and educational".  Please do not place words in my mouth as you do not speak for me, nor should you attempt to spin what I said to fit your needs. Please do not "instigate" people.

Thank you,

Lisa

CRAIG, Not Irrational, not Daniel...CRAIG.

You sanctimonious, self-important, delusional, egotistical, pompous pseudo intellectual wind bag!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you picture yourself sipping tea with dignitaries, listening to chamber music and hearing them say: "Jolly Good Craig, you are so superior to the average peon, how can you be so smart so often...good show old chap!"

You sir are an a$$hole! Nothing less, and if you can see thru the fog of your own visions of grandeur you would see what an a$$hole you truly are!

I have never heard such a dickhead so enthralled with the sound of his own voice!

Newsflash: Your intellect is questionable, your viewpoints are so obtuse and elementary that any poli-sci freshman could make swiss cheese out of! You are a closed minded bigot that generalizes people in the worst spirit of the pre civil rights south!

Craig: Don't talk just to hear your own voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 happy?

RT Concern,

I could not hear you.  Could you say it a little louder for me?  I know, when someone does not have anything particularly intelligent to say, they just get so frustrated and resort to screeming or pouting.  It's sort of primal and cathartic for the intellectually frustrated amongst us.

Try again, please.  I will stick my head out the window at 1:00 PM and maybe I will hear you!

Daniel

RT - why don't you go find some more off colour religious cartoons that you could share with all of us?
