State aims to fine 36 Morris landowners Monday, September 24, 2007
Some 36 gas stations, governmental bodies and owners of other contaminated sites in almost every Morris County municipality could face fines of at least $8,000 for failing to file contaminated site monitoring reports, state environmental officials announced today. Ranging from the Boonton Municipal Building to the Franklin School in Roxbury to Exxon in Florham Park, the Morris sites are among 950 enforcement actions launched statewide by the state Department of Environmental Protection. "This situation seriously undermines the department's ability to ensure protection of public health and the environment," said DEP Commissioner Lisa Jackson. "We are committed to using every enforcement tool available to bring these responsible parties into compliance as promptly as possible."
