1514. Planning board by todddavid, 2/27/04 9:48 ET
Did help people understand things better. I think it helped from what I hear having that one emotional outburst. At first I know it bothered alot of people that finally saw how some people had let emotion take over there senses and when he attempted to shout over the board the chair and the planning board lawyer reminded him of the law. Many people who were there and read about it now see how if you let emotion carry you away it will only lead to court.
I was happy to see the crowd be calm after that out burst so in a way the emotional guy helped people see how things had gotten out of hand.
Some people like that angry fellow are more against this because of the group and what their faith is. Then what they want to build.
This can only be done in a legal manner planning boards cannot let emotion or anger guide them.
I was glad they pointed that out to him and others. I was also glad to see so many people understand that now.

...That the Rev is unwilling to cap his congregation numbers at 25,000.
He said "no".
It was a crude way to go about it but the guy got the job done, and done more gently we would never know what we know now.
We have indeed seen the light!

Because Agilent would not want the meeting there. Agilent would not want to take a chance that someone trips and falls. It would make it harder for them to sell the property if there was a lawsuit hanging over it.

People might see the ACTUAL effect that even 400 cars would have on green pond road!

Don't want that!

Good point, except that there were over 400 cars at Knolls for the first Planning board meeting. And the road out isn't any bigger than Green Pond.

Funny, I didn't see any articles in the paper about the traffic jam that night. Traffic flowed VERY SMOOTHLY out of there! Amazing.

Woops, better scratch this argument off the list and look for something else.

And the church expects how many cars for each service?

Sorry Karen

Took you fifteen minutes to "get out of the parking lot"

WOW! Now I know you are really a caring person! You care how long it will take CC members to get out of their parking lot!

But since no one here says they are be planning on becoming CC members, then PARKING LOT DELAYS won't affect them, will they?

Let's get back on track, Karen. Nobody is talking about parking lot traffic. We are talking about ROAD TRAFFIC. And you have made my point by your omission. Because there was no traffic jams when you got OUT ONTO the Road. And the same will be true when CC moves to Greenpond Rd.

I was getting gas at the Texaco one day around 3PM. There was a van in Agilent driveway trying to make a left unto Green Pond. I got a full tank of gas and paid and we both drove away at the same time. How many students will have to come out of there and make a left? 500?? Good Luck!

First Planning Board meeting & the future

I stayed until the end of the first planning board meeting.  I rushed out to my car to avoid the traffic from the 100 or so people who were still there, bleary eyed at 11PM.  I got held up for 10 minutes or so at route 46 when two police officers were trying to figure out how to 'fix' the light to stay green in our direction.  Remember - this is 11PM at night and NOT many people were still at the meeting.  Once they got the light green, they held it that way and let traffic (albeit light traffic on a snowy Monday at 11PM) on Route 46 back up.

Try getting 1000 cars out of 140 Green Pond Rd making a left turn at the new light that will surely be placed there...With the police officers 'fixing' the light in the green position and all others waiting, and waiting, and waiting...

FYI - 1000 cars form a line of traffic approximately 4 miles long.

Now - flash foward to the future.  It's 2015.  The gracefully aging Rev. Ireland has met or exceeded all his growth projections....Oops - I forgot - he has no projections...just tens of millions of dollars and a dream...If he had made growth projections back in 2004, he'd be pleased to find that his flock has grown to that magical 25,000 number and even includes a new record 15 families from Rockaway Township.  Of course, all the improvements he has ever asked for have been approved by the planning board.  After all, only 11 years earlier (in 2004), he threatened them with their first RLUIPA lawsuit and they backed down and gave him all he asked for.  Once the planning board backed down the first time, Rev. Ireland knew that the RLUIPA threat would get him whatever he wanted.  Over the past 11 years, he's used the threat of lawsuit against religious freedom to build a beautiful parking structure that holds 17,000 cars.  Unfortunately, he didn't have room for the baseball and soccer fields when the outdoor stadium went in, but the free Christian concerts are worth it - some even go to late night.  And how many high tech Christians got jobs (3 even came from Rockaway Township) - sorry, no Jews need apply, when they wired the entire campus for interactive video so he's not stuck preaching to only the 8000 that fit in the newly modified chapel, but can actually reach out to another 5,000 around the campus (include the newly opened high school).  Once that retractable dome, recently approved by the planning board, goes into the stadium, Rev. Ireland will be able to have his dream of 15,000 together in one location so he can get back to doing only two services a week instead of the 5 he's up to lately...but...Oh yeah, getting back to 2015....Imagine 10,000 cars trying to enter / leave.  It's easier now that Ireland Way (Green Pond Rd. was renamed back in 2009) has been rebuilt as a six lane road with a movable barrier so 5 lanes can go in one direction at a time.  It's amazing that if you lined up all those 10,000 cars, they'd be FORTY MILES LONG.  It really doesn't feel in when they're all snug in the parking garage.  It doens't even take 45 minutes to get out.  Of course, the poor people who live nearby can't get their cars on the road, but that's OK.  Rev. Ireland is bound to buy them up soon for the next planned expansion.  And it's the least he can do, to help our town.

Hey - it may sound exaggerated...but what do you think Rev. Ireland's goals are?  He's already stated that he won't stop at 25,000 people.  Remember, 25,000 people will come in 15,000 cars which is a line of cars SIXTY MILES long.  The chance to affect the future of our town is NOW.  Stand up NOW for what is right or forever suffer the consequences.

Why is it that most of the local residents who oppose Christ Church coming to Rockaway (no - we're not racists, we're not anti-religion, we're just afraid of the impact) post their names to their posts.

People in favor of Christ Church - other than tED dOTY (why do you do that cap thing tED - it's annoying...do you like being annoying), not one of you uses your name.  You're all hiding.  Come out, come out, wherever you are.  Stand behind your opinions just as the members of VORT and many who oppose Christ Church purchasing 140 Green Pond Rd. do.

One for the campfire?  I believe Rev. Ireland has already been asked about growth and said that he wouldn't stop even with 25,000.

Truth can be stranger than fiction...and if we allow Rev. Ireland to bully our town now - under the name of RLUIPA, we'll be setting ourselves up for a future of more of the same.

1517. Most in Town...

Todd has now acknowledged that, where previously "most in town were fine either way", he now admits that only "many in town" feel that way.

It's encouraging to see the residents of our good township showing a healthy concern about preserving our beautiful area.

Re:
Most in Town... by mrsstark4, 2/27/04

Doesn't say anything about people's feelings on the matter.

Again, how many planning board meetings had even 100 attendees? EVER?

How many 3-hour weeknight meetings do you think people are realistically able to attend? People with children, jobs, LIVES...can't attend every time.

Plus, as the meetings go on, it's natural that people will get sick of sitting in them and will miss some meetings. And as we're seeing, others take their places.

Seriously, regardless of whether you're pro or against, who really wants to sit and listen to a planning board meeting?

The fact that since the first planning board meetings started, there has been consistent interest, should tell you that nothing has "dropped off".

Lots of people went out of their way to attend the first one probably because they knew nothing at all about the application.

It may be that each meeting that people attend, they get enough information and don't attend again, yes it's possible--but it certainly doesn't mean they've changed their minds.

There's a new batch of people attending the meetings each time, evidenced by the absence of a lot of the people who signed up to speak last time, as well as a lack of familiar faces except for a few.

1527. Follow the Law - Pt 2
by rockres23yrs, 2/29/04 8:57 ET

Todd keeps using the mantra "follow the law". The law in this matter includes RLUIPA. RLUIPA allows a town to reject an application from a church if there is a "compelling reason" to do so. Todd may not consider clogged roads and environmental concerns to constitute a "compelling reason". I respectfully disagree but that may be for a court to decide. That's what courts are for. To resolve differences of opinion.

Once again, the continuing tax revenues of $630,000 per year that continue to flow to the town until the church takes title (or not) will more than offset the costs of litigation.

Todd - these are facts, not emotion.

Hopefully you and your imaginary store and imaginary customers can understand that.

by live2gether, 2/29/04 9:38 ET

We will have little benefit if any coming to RT if CC brings in 5 to 10,000 people-this is not a normal church or really a church at all. The enviornmental issues have to be seen yet and are great concern as is the traffic which could cripple the town. Property values in the highest sale areas may be damaged because of traffic and other concerns this large group could bring. RT need not be bribed with ball fields and basketball courts. Is Rev Ireland baiting the town and his followers by a resort called a church? Also we need to be careful not to raise a Jew vs, Christian issue- I see it developing. Anyone who is anti-Christian or anti-black please do not say anything at the meetings. They have a right to hire who they want. I am not considered a "Christian" either. This prejudice is a small and emotional issue. The real issues are traffic. polution, quality of life and taxes. Not all legal issues but real issues-I believe we can defeat this with out much anger and other emotions I saw at the meeting last week,,The issues of their web site is a good one-It clearly states what their intent is. VORT's atis doing a great job and Ireland's attorney is not. If Ireland can not come with a normal church and answer simple questions then stay out. When he says "Do not insult me" I have to laugh, for his aviodance of any issues is the insult and arrogance.

He's getting desperate--he used to merely imply things about the township residents' opinions and motives.

Now he's coming right out and making blanket statements--hate, racism, anger, breaking the law.

What's next, Todd?

Are you going to suggest that we're responsible for global warming?

You cite potential membership numbers for CC at 5 to 10,000.  Did you realize that Ireland would not cap those numbers at 25,000 when I really pushed him at the meeting?  I wonder why not?  Could it be that the 25,000 number is his real undeclaired projection?  25,000 would certainly be more closely proportionate to the magnitude of the investment and physical size of this "thing" that he wants to construct.  As for emotional issues at planning board meetings, please go to gsmls.com and look at the listings for Morris County.  Do a search on each town in the county.  I always provide the full range of housing prices up to 2 Meg$ for my searches.  You will see that, despite the fact that this is far from the largest population town in Morris, it has the largest home inventory on the market.  Furthermore, I would advise people to get a market appraisal of their home by at least one real estate agent.  We had it done by three seperate agents.  Our homes value has dropped by a few hundred K$ since this CC stuff began.  Emotional Issue?  You mess with our biggest asset and you bet it is an emotional issue.  One last thing here.  If you ask the real estate agent if you can sell your RT home and purchase another in Morris County, will it be possible to purchase one comparable to the one that you presently own for the same price.  The answer for us has been NO!  The reason given is simply "because your present house is in RT."  Agents will not really tell you the reason why.  But we all know the reason.

1560. No middle ground
by RockTwpRes, 3/3/04 11:18 ET

There can be no middle ground. All the 'olive branches' that Rev. Ireland offers (or will offer in the future) are (will be) minor and side issues.

The main issue is the number of congregants that they have now and in the future, and the traffic those congregants will generate.

Look at Rev. Ireland's two quotes in today's Daily Record article:

"We are willing to make concessions," Ireland said.

"We can't change the size of the congregation," Ireland said.

So tell us - what concessions could they make to reduce traffic, when they can't change the size of their congregation.

What concession will they make in the future? Megachurches attempt to grow and CC will attempt to grow. If their track record for growth is any indication, they WILL grow, and they will grow quickly. How will CC address future traffic issues / growth?

Will they promise us not to grow? It'll never happen. They'll never make a meaningfull concession because there are no concessions they can make that will both allow them to grow boundlessly and also address Rockaway Township residents' traffic concerns.

I think I get what norb's saying, I believe his/her take is that the church wants the property values to go down so their congregants can afford to buy property here.

That would automatically allow the church to continue to rake in all that dough from the members who now would live near the church and continue to attend.

OK I can buy that.
