OK. I have lived in Lk. Telemark for over 30 yrs, and have heard noises from a lot of different local wildlife, but lately I have been hearing something new. Approx. 3-4 times during the past 2 wks. we have been awakened anywhere from 1am to 3am by the most blood curdling squealing outside. It sounds like an animal being tortured or killed and the only way I can describe it is similar to a pig squealing. It is loud enough to wake us from a sound sleep and send the dog into frenzied barking. It lasts for only a few seconds, but I cant imagine what is making the noise. Anyone else heard it or have any ideas of what it might be? Last night around 1am was the most recent. Thanks. C.
Don't we have bobcats in our area? I've heard those sound like a screaming woman. (I always thought we had one in our neighborhood but turns out it's my crazy neighbor. Who'da thunk?)
When our cats fight with the (same) neighbor's cat, it also sounds pretty shrieky.
We also have coyotes that can sing pretty loud, but I wouldn't call it blood-curdling I don't think; it does make the dogs go nuts when they start hooting out there.
If it's blood-curdling and wakes you up, my bet is on the bobcat. (or my neighbor)
I suppose it could be one of those, although the sound doesnt sound like what I would expect a bobcat or coyote to sound like, although I dont think I have heard either in person.
No newly weds in the area, but Lisa and Adam dont live too far away and Kim and John are right next door. Who knows?
Compare it to the three bobcat sounds located here

Hey guys, thanks for the link. No definitely not even similar to either of the 3 bobcats. Not the cougar either. I guess a Cougar is the same as a Mountain Lion and there have been reports of them in NNJ, but thats not the sound. It does sound like something being killed/tortured, but I cant imagine why we would hear the sound on multiple nights unless there are a lot of stupid cats in the area getting killed. The best analogy I can give is it sounds like a pig squealing when they are scared or being caught. I'll have to hook up something to try to get a recording of it, if it happens again. C.
I went back to that site and looked up "pigs" and this is what the noise sounds like. The "pigs pissed" sound, only extended for up to about 10-15 secs.

Well I think we can put an end to our noise investigation. After hearing that sound clip which seemed very close to the noise, our motion sensor floodlights came on last nite around 11pm. What did we see prancing down our driveway, but a Red Fox. I would say thats a pretty good indication of what we have been hearing. I dont know when their mating season is, but that could be a "factor" in the noise as well. Thanks all for the help in IDing our noisy neighbors.
FYI - C1 status for Hibernia and Bever Brook are being signed into law this week... AND GINA is being signed by the President- All in all a good week for me - now if I could get my dad out of the hospital it would be a great week!

The Christ Church Plan for the redevelopment of 140 Green Pond Rd is just too big for the area.
I don't know about it being Redd Fox, he died a few years ago.....unless someone in the area is watching some old Sanford and Son reruns with the volume up high?
After some more careful research, I have concluded that there is a strong probability that someone in your neighborhood might be blasting some old Yoko Ono records.
I love mysteries. Check your roof for holes, you might be hearing the whistle of some of those errant mortor shells from Picatinny.
You didn't put a 12 volt battery in a 6 volt hearing aid per chance?
Of course another possible cause could be due to the high iron content in the area which will create fluxuations in the earths magnetic field resulting in variations of gravity and an enviornment favorable for rifts in the space time continuim sometimes resulting in the creation of micro black holes which then result in wormholes that are pathways through time itself which may mean you keep hearing the same noise over and over as you relive the same moment in time.
Or maybe some of those mortor rounds are just hitting the foxes?

Yeah Man. I think he needs to share with everyone here on the board. I ran out the other day and since then I havent heard anything. I also havent been seeing all those crazy colors on the ceiling either.
In all seriousness regarding Picatinny, they must have moved their test range away from Jefferson and closer to Telemark cause they have been rocking the house since they started up again. Waiting for something to come crashing thru the skylights.
That blasting could be coming from the Quarry too. It shakes the hell out of the houses here in the Meridan section. As long as there are no mushroom clouds we are ok.
Why, of course! I mean - - - my entire engineering, math and physics background comes from watching those tv shows. How else could one possibly get a good education?

I always assumed you got all that education in school, where I also assumed you excelled at math, physics and anti-social studies?
The fox paid us a visit again last night. He's a cute little bugger. Doesnt seem to be particularly frightened of the dog barking or lights coming on. Just going about his business. Too bad some of the human residents of this town cant be as pleasant as the local wildlife. (present company excepted).
