The determined folk leading the opposition to Christ Church's proposed house of worship on Green Pond Road in Rockaway Township are throwing a party.
Voices of Rockaway Township, the citizens' group that popped up about a year ago after the church's plans became known, has scheduled a family fun day and spaghetti dinner for Oct. 10 in the Lake Telemark section of the township. The event, which will run from 2 to 6 p.m., will feature a bounce house, clowns, magic and music from local bands.
But the day also will include a little bit of education.
A flier announcing the event says attendees will "hear the latest on the Christ Church application," as well as news about the "historic Highlands bill."
The Highlands bill is certainly in play when it comes to the church application. The church slightly reduced the size of its proposal in hopes of qualifying for an exemption from the new law.
The church's need for an exemption caught some by surprise. A week before the church announced that it was seeking an exemption, pastor David Ireland gave the impression at a meeting at the Daily Record that the reduced size of the project would meet all requirements of the Highlands bill.
A church spokesman contends that there's no discrepancy, describing the exemption as more of a legal technicality than anything else.
Regardless of what happens with the Highlands, Voices of Rockaway Township, which has hired its own lawyer, needs money to keep up its fight.
The recommended donation for a family to attend the party is $45. It is $30 for singles and $20 for seniors.
Let's hope that no members of the planning board or township council show up. Talk about a conflict of interest.
Meanwhile, Pastor Ireland has a new book out with the intriguing title of "Why Drown When You Can Walk on Water?" Published by Baker Books, it sells for $12.99.
Among other things, the book traces Ireland's rise from atheism to an evangelical minister with a flock of 5,000. One of the testimonials about the book comes from Leonard Sweet, a professor of evangelism at Drew University in Madison. It reads, "This book should help David Ireland's ministry to go from being one of the church's best-kept secrets to one of its best-loved stories."
Ireland's ministry may be a secret somewhere, but certaily not in Morris County.

Talk about Messianic Complexes!! I think that a more appropriate title for his book would have been:
"Why Work When you can Trample on G-d and his People?"
It seems that Snowflack made a concerted effort to show both sides...very unlike some of his earlier writing. Commendable.
Wonder if anyone else saw him, Jennings and Mr. Turdy nearly high five-ing each other at the meeting.
I thought the Record's reporters behavior of pacing, scurrying back and forth to each other to whisper and giggle like 3rd grade school girls quite childish. The photographer’s feeble attempt to cite the freedom of speech as license to annoy, was also quite weak. I can only assume that she realized how she embarrassed herself, and that is the reason she left way before her "colleagues".
Mr. Snowflack and Mr Jennings should show more conservatism in public when cavorting with known Jacka$$es.... it really reduces credibility.
Someone once told me never to continue an argue
Someone once told me never to continue an argument with an idiot, or even be seen talking with one..."guilty by association"...the reporters should take a lesson.
